Modern Architecture & Development (MAD) is a full-service architecture, real estate development, and property management firm dedicated to creating thoughtful, enduring places. Matthew Clapper is the Founder and CEO of Modern Architecture & Development (MAD), where he champions purposeful design, early collaboration, and architect-led development as tools for creating meaningful places and resilient communities. A licensed Architect, Matthew brings a multidisciplinary perspective shaped by advanced education, professional practice, and national leadership within the profession.
He holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas, a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University in New York City, and an Advanced Professional Certificate in Real Estate Development from New York University. He has earned the NCARB Certificate, reflecting the highest standards of professional knowledge and experience, and is a LEED Accredited Professional, underscoring his commitment to sustainable and responsible design.
Matthew is deeply engaged in professional service and advocacy at the national, state, and local levels. Nationally, he served for five years on the AIA Small Firm Exchange (SFx) Board, including as 2021 Chair, and currently serves on the AIA Strategic Council, where he helps identify emerging issues and guide the future direction of the profession. He also serves on the AIA/AGC Joint Committee, the Institute’s longest-running collaboration, focused on strengthening architect–contractor relationships nationwide. Locally, Matthew is actively involved with AIA committees focused on urban design, small firm practice, legislation efforts, and conference planning, ensuring national initiatives remain grounded in local practice realities and community impact.
